    Ceramic Tile Coasters Tutorial

Posted on October 17, 2011 by Leanna Reece

Have any leftover ceramic tiles from a recent project, like Hipcycle's Susan Tucker mentioned in her last post? If not, check out your local ReStore and grab someone else's leftovers for today's uber-easy diy project! (Be sure to buy some tiles that are 'loners,' rather than those that would be enough for a whole tiling project, to make this a true upcycling project.)

This is very similar to the decorative switch plate tutorial, so if you've already done that, this will be a snap!

    Easy and practical!

    Tools:

    • Scissors
    • Craft knife
    • Sponge brush
    • Pencil
    • Ruler (optional)
    Supplies:
    • Mod Podge
    • Spray sealant
    • Old piece of cardboard
    • Decorative paper (I used paper from a dilapidated hymnal.)
    • Ceramic tile
    • Adhesive felt circles (I've found that they're cheapest at Big Lots- if you have one- and big box hardware stores.)

    Steps:

    1. Place your ceramic tile in the center of your paper of choice, and draw a line around the perimeter, approximately 1" from the edges. (Use a ruler if needed.)
    2. Cut along the lines. Don't worry, you won't be graded on accuracy.
    3. Set the paper face down on your piece of cardboard.
    4. Apply Mod Podge to the coaster, and set in the center of the paper, pressing down.
    5. Flip over and smooth out any bubbles.
    6. Let dry.
    7. Use your craft knife to cut the corners off the paper- not too close, just enough to remove the excess.
    8. Apply Mod Podge to two parallel sides of the coaster, and press the paper over the sides.

Definitely should have washed them first!

    1. Let dry.
    2. Fold the other two sides up and trim paper as desired, and glue the remaining two sides.
    3. Apply Mod Podge to the excess paper and fold over the back of the coaster. Apply additional Mod Podge as needed to secure.
    4. Let dry.
    5. Apply the desired number of coats of Mod Podge to the coaster, letting dry in between coats. I did 3 coats to be on the safe side.
    6. Let dry overnight.
    7. Spray with waterproof sealant, since these will otherwise absorb moisture from drinks.
    8. Let dry overnight
    9. Add adhesive felt circles to the back, and coast away!

It's not going anywhere, Amy! Glad to hear you like these- I'm still using the ones I made in October- except for the one I knocked off and broke! (Oops!)
