Have any leftover ceramic tiles from a recent project, like Hipcycle's Susan Tucker mentioned in her last post? If not, check out your local ReStore and grab someone else's leftovers for today's uber-easy diy project! (Be sure to buy some tiles that are 'loners,' rather than those that would be enough for a whole tiling project, to make this a true upcycling project.)
This is very similar to the decorative switch plate tutorial, so if you've already done that, this will be a snap!
Easy and practical!
Tools:
- Scissors
- Craft knife
- Sponge brush
- Pencil
- Ruler (optional)
- Mod Podge
- Spray sealant
- Old piece of cardboard
- Decorative paper (I used paper from a dilapidated hymnal.)
- Ceramic tile
- Adhesive felt circles (I've found that they're cheapest at Big Lots- if you have one- and big box hardware stores.)
Steps:
- Place your ceramic tile in the center of your paper of choice, and draw a line around the perimeter, approximately 1" from the edges. (Use a ruler if needed.)
- Cut along the lines. Don't worry, you won't be graded on accuracy.
- Set the paper face down on your piece of cardboard.
- Apply Mod Podge to the coaster, and set in the center of the paper, pressing down.
- Flip over and smooth out any bubbles.
- Let dry.
- Use your craft knife to cut the corners off the paper- not too close, just enough to remove the excess.
- Apply Mod Podge to two parallel sides of the coaster, and press the paper over the sides.
- Let dry.
- Fold the other two sides up and trim paper as desired, and glue the remaining two sides.
- Apply Mod Podge to the excess paper and fold over the back of the coaster. Apply additional Mod Podge as needed to secure.
- Let dry.
- Apply the desired number of coats of Mod Podge to the coaster, letting dry in between coats. I did 3 coats to be on the safe side.
- Let dry overnight.
- Spray with waterproof sealant, since these will otherwise absorb moisture from drinks.
- Let dry overnight
- Add adhesive felt circles to the back, and coast away!

It's not going anywhere, Amy! Glad to hear you like these- I'm still using the ones I made in October- except for the one I knocked off and broke! (Oops!)
