During a recent visit to my local ReStore, I discovered an entire shelf of both new and used plastic switchplates. I snagged a couple of used ones, knowing that I’d find something to do with them- especially at just a quarter each!
This week’s tutorial for decorative switch plates is, in general, more of a repurposing project than an upcycling project. Although if you select switchplates that are in bad condition and would otherwise be tossed into the trash, this would definitely qualify. Either way, the paper you are using should be upcycled. Consider using newspaper, old maps, sheet music, a dictionary page, an old encyclopedia, or an old children’s book as paper.
Tools:
- Craft knife
- Mod Podge
- Sponge brush
- Pen or pencil
- Scissors
So much better!
Supplies:
- Old piece of cardboard
- Decorative paper
- Switchplate
- Ensure that your selected paper is approximately 1 inch larger all the way around the switchplate.
- Lay paper face-side down on cardboard.
- Apply Mod Podge to front of switchplate.
- Press switchplate on to paper.
- Flip over and smooth out any bumps. (Don’t skip this- that’s why mine are bumpy!)
- Let dry.
- Use craft knife to cut about 1 inch around all sides of the switchplate.
- Cut an “X” in all of the light switch holes and screw holes, as well as a diagonal line inwards from each corner.
- 9. Fold two opposite side inwards on the back of the switchplate, applying Mod Podge and smoothing as you go.
- Trim any extra paper.
- Fold in and glue the other two edges.
- Fold back the paper in the lightswitch hole(s) and glue.
- Let dry.
- Use a pen or pencil to push the paper over the screw holes inwards.
- Cover with a light coat of Mod Podge.
- Install over your light switch once dry.
No one will see the back, but this is what mine look like!
With the ability to use literally any kind of paper, you can customize these switchplates to the decor of any room. Try it- you’ll be surprised at how little time this takes! (Just remember to smooth out any bumps or bubbles!)
