Auction Fun!

One dollar!

As a young child, I remember going to a few local auctions with my parents. My memories are generally limited to the fact that I knew my dad would buy me a hot dog and soda, and otherwise he and my mom would stand around a lot. Sometimes I saw adults I knew from the area, which was great because they would often give me popcorn or something similarly exciting to a youngster. Otherwise, it was pretty boring for me, and for that reason I had not returned to an auction- until recently.

In the beautiful hills of Decatur county, Indiana, is the sleepy little town of Millhousen. Every year St. Denis Church has a consignment option, which I had the opportunity to attend this year with my grandparents and mother. Hopeful that the experience would be different as an adult, I was excited to go.

Upon arrival, we located the tent with the random housewares and such, and once the auction began, it was on. My mother was on a roll- she would wait until the price was down to $2 for a lot and then offer $1. Filling in for her, I did the same, ending up with a car load of treasures for $20- literally!

Stretch that dollar!

The one disappointment was a piece that I really wanted to post on here. Someone had mounted four old faucets on a piece of scrap wood to make a coat rack! Unfortunately for me, it went for a pretty penny. It is, however, another idea for my increasingly long list of projects!

We accidentally bought a bed headboard and foot board that happened to be included with a box of books. I’ll be turning that into a “bed of flowers” this coming spring, and it’s actually my favorite purchase of the day. I can barely begin to describe all of the wonderful things we discovered buried in the bottom of the boxes once we returned home, so you’ll just have to wait and see what I make out of it all!

What about you? What is your favorite auction find?
