Did you know that Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the average American dumps almost 4.5 pounds of waste into landfills every day? Meanwhile there are nearly 300 million iPhone and Android devices in the marketplace. Both of these numbers grow daily.
That’s why the idea for the Create Change App was born.
Sean McKenna and Jenelle Montilone are in the process of developing the app to show crafty users how to reuse old materials in new ways. Whether you want to design a hanging lamp from a teakettle or refashion a soda bottle into a holiday ornament, the ideas are endless.
While many people recycle these days, only about half of Americans do it on a daily basis, according to a story in the Virtual News. However, the purpose of the Create Change App is to identify ways to reuse the forgotten “junk” most people have lying around their homes, in closets, basements, garages, and attics. Having upcycling ideas right in your hand will likely inspire people to minimize their waste impact.
McKenna and Montilone then plan to publish these upcycling ideas, making them available to everyone using the app. And users will have the option of sharing their own project ideas with other upcyclers as well.
However, right now the pair is waiting to get the project funded. They need $17,000 to do just that. So they’ve set up a webpage at Kickstarter asking for support to help fund the development of the original content that will be available: beautifully photographed, thorough text and video tutorials.
The developers say that this Kickstarter project will allow them to make this app available on both iPhone and Android platforms and bring Create Change to you! As Montilone puts it, “Pretty cool, huh?” Yeah, it’s a pretty cool story of ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit that focuses on reusing old materials in new ways.
Would you use an upcycling app? I know I would!

Danielle! Thank you for sharing the Create Change App & our Kickstarter project. We hope to instigate a movement to change the way we consume and create- and the free app is only a part of it!
In November I'll be hosting an International Create Change Event where people all over the world will take part in repurposing 1 item for one day and see first hand the impact we'd make if we did it daily!
In addition we are currently organizing Create Change Live events, an ecocraftaganza of sorts. Nurturing the DIY & ecowarriors that are seeded inside all of us with music, workshops, and eco artisan vendors. Wanna bring the movement to your town? Email me at [email protected]
