Reusing Old Materials in New Ways Adds Character to Your Home

Posted on August 8, 2012 by Danielle

There is much wisdom in the saying, "What's old is new again." While the "old" could be an adjective to describe fads in clothing, music, or attitudes, it most aptly implies reusing old materials in new ways.

The possibilities for repurposing items are only as limited as the human imagination. A little creativity and refurbishing will rejuvenate any piece for a place of honor in your home, while sparing the landfill of harboring yet another lost opportunity.

Keep those small, nagging items in their places in your drawers with defunct ice cube trays.

There are lots of new ways to use your old stuff. Looking about your house, you are sure to find items sitting in a closet or stuffed beneath your bed. Consider some of these original ideas to bring these items back into circulation:

    • A rustic jewelry display or tie rack created with a handle-less rake will make quite a statement on any wall. In fact the rustier the rake, the bolder the statement. The items organized on its forks will simply add an elegant contrast.
    • Ice cube tray organizers will keep those small, nagging items in their places in your drawers. Tacks, paperclips, rubber bands, and even stamps will have their own homes for easy access.
    • Crib railings (hung with their slats parallel to the floor) make a memory-filled magazine rack. While you peruse your titles, you will fondly remember your little one peeking over the top.
    • A worn shutter becomes a handy catch-all when hung in an entryway. A few brass cup hooks make great storage for keys and the slats readily accept mail and photos. You can paint the shutter to match your decor or keep it rustic.
    • Hang an old ladder from the ceiling of your laundry room to air- dry clothing. You will make an aesthetic statement while saving the energy that would be used by your dryer. Old ladders are great for upcycling projects, here 15 are more cool and creative ideas.
    • The pot rack that you once loved in your kitchen has lost its charm, so hang it from a porch or patio and adorn it with plants.

Each of these upcycling solutions will add great personality and depth to your home. Plus, the minute your friends and family see your creative designs, they will return to their homes to find castaways for their own upcycling products.
