That's me, presenting at FDU.
Last Friday I had the honor of making a presentation at Fairleigh Dickinson University's Institute for Sustainable Enterprise as part of their Breakfast Seminar Series. I spoke on upcycling and the upcycling industry. They get some real heavy hitters for this Seminar Series, and draw a really well-informed, passionate group of attendees every month, so it was really special to be there.
The slides I used are on my LinkedIn profile, but in general, what I spoke about was the upcycling industry (yes, there is one! woohoo!) and about opportunities for growth within this industry. And of course I used a lot of different Hipcycle products as examples:)
Some thoughtful Q&A.
From speaking with the various attendees, who as I mentioned were well-versed in Sustainable Enterprise, it reinforced just how new upcycling is as an industry. It was topic that was new to many people there. Yes, the practice of upcycling has been around forever and is only getting more prevalent, but the notion of companies forming around the idea of diverting would-be trash from landfills is still pretty fresh.
If you upcycle at home or as a hobby, keep doing it! If you use your upcycled projects in your daily life or have the support of other people that use your upcycled goods, you are part if the solution of reducing waste. If you don't upcycle and there is something you need, seek out quality upcycled products, whether they come from Hipcycle or from someplace else. In that way, your getting what you need and doing your part too. How sweet is that?
Andrew Sell is Chief Hipcycler at Hipcycle, which sells attractive, durable and reasonably-priced upcycled products. You can follow Hipcycle on Facebook and Twitter.
